Dr. Craig D. Thorne serves as the Medical Director for Enterprise Occupational Health, Cleveland Clinic. He is responsible for the strategic, clinical, operational, and financial oversight of all Occupational Health programs including Caregiver Occupational Health Services (for internal employees), Cleveland Clinic At Work (for external clients),  Caring for Caregivers (including the internal Employee Assistance Program), and the Center for Workplace Violence Prevention and Caregiver Well-Being. In addition, he is responsible for working collaboratively with Environmental Health and Safety, Infection Prevention and Wellness to protect the health and promote the well-being of the 82,000 Cleveland Clinic caregivers globally. He serves as the co-chair of numerous caregiver safety program committees and is an active member of various other committees, including those for disability management, infection prevention and workplace violence prevention.

He earned his Medical Degree from Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, followed by a rotating internship at University of Ottawa, Ontario. He went on to complete his residency and chief residency in Internal Medicine at the Department of Medicine, Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. He earned a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and completed a fellowship in Occupational and Environmental Medicine at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland, and a Master of Business Administration focusing on Medical Services Management from the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. Dr. Thorne is board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Occupational and Environmental Medicine.

Prior to joining Cleveland Clinic in 2023, Dr. Thorne served as the Chief Medical Director for Occupational Medicine and Business Health Services for the Yale New Haven Health System (from 2018-2023), Vice President and Medical Director, Employee Health and Wellness for Erickson Living (from 2007-2018), and as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Medical Director, Employee Health and Safety at the University of Maryland Medical Center and the Baltimore V.A. Medical Center (from 2001-2007).  Under his leadership, in 2016 Erickson Living was awarded the Corporate Health Achievement Award by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine for excellence in integrated employee health, safety and well-being programs and services.

From 1997-2001, Dr. Thorne served as the Medical Director of the Police and Fire Clinic (PFC Associates) in Washington, D.C. where he provided and directed clinical care (for work related and non-work-related conditions), medical surveillance and preventive services for Police Officers and Fire Fighters/EMTs, including the U.S. Secret Service.

Currently, he is a Fellow of both the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM) and the American College of Physicians (ACP). At ACOEM, he has served for eight consecutive years as a Planning Committee Member for the American College of Occupational Health’s annual conference with a focus on both clinical and management/administration tracks. He is an active member of the Medical Center Occupational Health and Corporate Medicine components of the College and serves on the House of Delegates. In 2025, he was appointed as a Fellow of the international Collegium Ramazzini Society which advances science and public health-based solutions to protect working populations, advance knowledge in the treatment and management of occupational illnesses, promote environmental health, and save lives.    

Dr. Thorne actively shares his professional experience and expertise in several ways. He lectures internally and nationally in the practice of Occupational Medicine (including Virtual Health Services), the Business of Health (with humanity in mind), Integrated Employee Health and Wellness Services and Programs, as well as Physician Leadership Development.

As a personal health and fitness enthusiast, he enjoys hiking, active travel and long distance running to maintain his own fitness and work-life balance.
